Warwick Music unveils the pBuzz!

A brand new instrument aimed at creating the next generation of brass musicians has been unveiled this week.

The pBuzz, the latest invention by Coventry-based Warwick Music, can be played by children as young as three and resembles a recorder crossed with a vuvuzela, but requires the musician to “buzz” their lips to make sound. Warwick Music specialises in reinventing expensive brass instruments as cheaper, plastic versions that still produce a quality sound.

The pBuzz is the third instrument in the portfolio and follows the pBone and the pTrumpet, which are light, ergonomic and durable takes on the trombone and trumpet, respectively.

The pBuzz is Warwick Music’s cheapest instrument to date, retailing at £14.95. “We’re hoping this will become a global phenomenon,” said chief executive Steven Greenall. “We want future professional musicians to say, ‘I started with a pBuzz’.”

Warwick Music is now the biggest seller of trombones in the world and unlike their other instruments, which are primarily sold in music shops or bought by schools, the pBuzz will be available in high street stores and early learning centres.

“We’re losing kids to iPads and online gaming,” says Mr Greenall. “This is a way to get them engaged with instruments instead of computers.”

Warwick Music makes its products in the UK and 80pc of sales are now generated from exports, mostly to the US. The company has several other instruments in development: “We’re not just looking at brass but wind as well,” says Mr Greenall. “Flutes, clarinets, saxophones, these are huge markets.”
